==> MARINE CORPS MARATHON – HALFWAY THERE

The Marine Corps Marathon is a major opportunity to put your emcomm training to work. It will be held on Sunday, October 28. It involves cooperation between two ARRL Sections, (MDC and VA) and many diverse public service entities in DC and VA such as police, fire and rescue, not to mention the Marine Corps. Many hours of planning go into this major area event. At least 150 Amateur Radio operators are needed to work in a number of different capacities.

Signing up to help as an Amateur Radio operator requires two steps.
First you must sign up at the website hosted by the group that runs the Marathon. You can do that by going to <http://www.ncacdc.com> and clicking the "Sign Up" link.

After you have signed up and submitted your information, within a few minutes you will be sent a confirmation email with a link for the second part of the sign up process. Click the link and fill out that form. It provides the planning team with your Amateur Radio capabilities to help them match you with an assignment. Finally, you will also need to fill in and send a .pdf waiver form to the event organizer. Be sure to print the form and mail or fax it. The contact info is in the email you will receive.

Working the Marine Corps Marathon is not only a great experience, in terms of public relations it also puts Amateur Radio front and center with local governments and public service entities.

Prince Georges County: West Virginia Storm Aid - Maryland "hams"
respond to a plea for help from the Federal US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Washington, DC. Elleen Kane, of HHS had asked her husband, an employee at the Naval Air Systems Command, Paxtauent River, MD, how would be the best way to get survival information distributed to the citizens of WV. He contacted a co-worker, Shawn Donely, N3AE, of Calvert County for advice. Shawn sent an email to the MDC Section Manager, Jim Cross, WI3N, and two of his Assistant Section Managers, Steve Beckman, N3SB and Wanda Montgomery, KA3AHI asking for help. After receiving a phone call from Elleen, Wanda took the lead to help secure the assistance of the Amateur Radio community in Maryland to pass Public Service Announcements (PSAs) into WV for distribution by WV "hams" to the residents of storm stricken residents. In order to accomplishment this task, Wanda, KA3AHI, immediately sent regular emails to Ann Rinehart, KA8ZGY, Section Manager, Kanawha County, WV so that as the power and Internet service were brought back on line, Ann could get these messages relayed to the appropriate entities in her district for distribution. For further assistance Wanda turned to Al Nollmeyer, W3YVQ, MDC Assistant Section Manager for the National Traffic System.
Al was able to pass the PSAs into Tucker County, WV via dedicated traffic handlers of the NTS system. Later on in the event, Wanda received a telephone call from Ken Harris, WA8LLM Section Emergency Coordinator, Wood County, WV regarding a phone call he received from Ann Rinehart regarding the task at hand. Ken was elated to know that an emergency connection between MDC and WV was in place should it be needed further assistance be needed. This catastrophic storm affected not only WV but Maryland and Washington, DC as well. Only four counties in WV escaped the adverse power conditions and wind damage of this storm. Given the wide spread disaster of the storm affecting all parties involved, those tasked with passing the PSAs to the residents of WV, did so as best they could and as quickly as possible. Nets: Held five regularly scheduled training VHF nets on 146.61MHz on Tuesdays at 1930L. The monthly HF Hospital Net is held the Wednesday following the third Monday of the month on 3820KHz at 1930L.
Meetings: Monthly meeting held the 3 Monday of the month at the Fire Services Building, 6820 Webster St, Landover Hills, MD at 1930. Eyeball QSOs at 1900.

Thanks to all the MDC NTS Net NCS stations and Net Managers for timely reports of monthly activity. Well done.
Remember that NCS Net Reports are due in the hands of the Net Manager within 48 hours of the net session; NM Net reports and SAR/PSHR reports are due in the hands of the STM by midnight of the 6th of the following month.

The devoted MDC NTS team is maintaining daily operations on MEPN, BTN, MSN and MDD, including liaisons between those Nets and our connections to Region and Area NTS Nets on Cycles 2 and 4, plus our digital links. Many of our operators perform duties on multiple nets and days. They could certainly use some help with traffic handling and NCS and liaison duties on both voice and CW on many days of the week. New and experienced operators are also encouraged to join us on the Radio-email network. Software is free. Training will be provided for operators interested in helping. If you would like to join us in this important messaging service roll, contact the respective Net Managers or me and we will provide the details. These are skills which must be learned before emergency communications situations arise.

See the Section web page at:
www.arrl-mdc.net
The NTS Nets tab is near the top of the page. Scroll down to General Information for the Basic Traffic Handling Voice and CW tutorials and the WL2K tutorial.

---
MEPN: The MEPN meets on 3820 kHz; summer: 1800L EDST (Pre-net 1730L); winter: 1730L EST (Pre-net 1700L).
The net may be directed during the pre-net as soon as traffic is posted for handling. Liaison stations will monitor the Echolink WB3GXW-L connection (or the *WASH_DC* conference bridge backup) for check-ins on Echolink during the net. MEPN listed traffic may be pushed directly to county Target Stations on WL2K, outbound traffic to W3YVQ in Batch File format.

EL: The Echolink MDC NTS Net meets Tuesdays at 1920L
(directed) and daily (undirected) at 1800L (from MEPN) or as needed at the respective MDC Net times on the WB3GXW-L connection (*WASH_DC* conference bridge
alternate) to provide access to the NTS for stations not able to QNI the regular nets. Representatives from MEPN, BTN, MSN, MDD, all ARES® jurisdictions and other amateurs are welcome. Echolink is an internet-dependent function and an off-air function for traffic counting unless accessed via linked repeaters.

WL2K: The Winlink 2000 (WL2K) network provides for Radio-email messaging in the standard email format between served agencies, ARES(r) and NTS/NTSD. It is also used to carry attachments, such as ICS-213 messaging, Radiogram welfare traffic, and provides a protected gateway to addressees on the public internet. WL2K may be accessed via the internet, via packet radio, and via HF PacTor or WINMOR Gateway stations. WL2K is an on-air function for traffic counting when accessed via packet and HF, an off-air function if accessed via telnet/internet. (See the General Information, WL2K tutorial, at
www.arrl-mdc.net.)

OTHER NETS:
The WVA Net meets on 3811; summer 1800L EDST, winter 1700L EST if required by propagation. Liaisons to WVA from MEPN will need to be there promptly at the start of their net, assigned at the start of the MEPN pre-net or the previous night.

The DE net (DTN) is scheduled at 1830L on 3905 kHz., Monday through Saturday, the DELMARVA Net on Sunday.

The EPA Net is operating at 6:00 PM daily for the summer,
5:30 PM winter, on 3905 kHz.

==>  FINALLY. . .

I hope that everyone is having an enjoyable summer.

Two major events are on the horizon. One is the DXCC Convention being
held in Frederick on Saturday, August 25. If HF is what you do or you’d like to learn more about DX’ing, then you should attend.

Time is approaching the cutoff point for signing up for the Marine Corps Marathon. We’re over halfway towards the 140 plus volunteers we need. If you have never been involved in one and are concerned that you won’t know what is expected of you, don’t worry. Similar tasks are grouped under leaders who will help guide you through what you need to know. There is also an all hands briefing on the Saturday a week before the marathon that will cover what is needed. Generally you will need more than a hand held 5 watt transceiver, however, if that is all you have you can be put in a position where it will work. So please consider giving it a try. It is quite an experience.
