Amateur Radio DXpeditions March 2027 DXpedition
to South Georgia Island (VP0SG) – Press Release 14/08/2026
VP0SG South Georgia 2027: Landing Permit Granted
Amateur Radio DXpeditions (ARD) is pleased to announce that the VP0SG South
Georgia 2027 DXpedition has received its Regulated Activity Permit (RAP)
from the Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands (GSGSSI).
This marks a major milestone for the project and, after more than 18 months
of preparation and dialogue, confirms that VP0SG is authorised to conduct
its planned amateur radio operations at Husvik, South Georgia, in March
2027.
A responsible approach to a unique environment
The VP0SG team would like to express its sincere appreciation to GSGSSI for
the highly professional, thorough and constructive way in which the
application has been handled.
>From the beginning, ARD has sought to work closely with the Government to
develop an expedition that minimises its environmental footprint while
still allowing meaningful amateur radio activity. Particular attention has
been given to biosecurity, wildlife interactions, bird-strike mitigation,
antenna placement, waste management and emergency procedures.
The permit requires, among other measures, strict biosecurity controls,
continuous monitoring of antennas and specific bird-strike mitigation
measures.
We believe VP0SG can demonstrate that a major amateur radio DXpedition can
be conducted in a remote and environmentally sensitive location in a
responsible and cooperative manner. We hope that this approach will help
maintain the confidence of environmental authorities and contribute
positively to the possibility of future amateur radio activities in
similarly sensitive environments.
A rare opportunity for DXers worldwide
South Georgia remains one of the world's most sought-after DXCC entities.
The last major DXpedition, VP8SGI, took place in January–February 2016,
more than ten years before VP0SG.
VP0SG therefore represents a rare opportunity for thousands of amateurs to
add South Georgia to their DXCC records, obtain new band and mode contacts
and work South Georgia in FT8 for the first time.
With increasingly demanding biosecurity and environmental requirements
surrounding operations in remote and protected areas, opportunities to
undertake large-scale amateur radio activations from such locations may
become increasingly challenging. For DXers who need South Georgia, VP0SG is
therefore an opportunity worth taking seriously.
The next challenge: making it happen
Obtaining the landing permit is a major achievement, but it also comes at a
critical moment for the expedition.
The team has already made substantial financial commitments, including
securing the expedition vessel MV MEREDIAN, while specialist equipment,
transportation, insurance, fuel and other logistics now need to be
finalised. The relatively late stage at which the regulatory approval has
become available leaves the team with a limited period to secure the
remaining funding before equipment and cargo commitments must be made.
Several DX foundations, clubs and private donors have already demonstrated
their confidence in VP0SG through generous financial and equipment support.
We are extremely grateful to every organisation and individual who has
helped us reach this point.
We now need the wider DX community to help us take the final step.
Whether through a DX club, foundation, corporate sponsorship or an
individual contribution, every donation helps cover the substantial upfront
costs of putting VP0SG on the air.
The team is committed to making the most of this opportunity: maximising
the number of unique contacts, providing strong CW, SSB and FT8 coverage,
giving small and modest stations a genuine opportunity to work South
Georgia, and operating with the highest possible standards of environmental
responsibility.
VP0SG is now permitted. The next challenge is getting the entire expedition
funded, equipped and ready for South Georgia.
We invite DX clubs, foundations, sponsors and individual operators around
the world to join us and help make this historic activation a reality.
