65 ARRL Affiliated Clubs in the Commonwealth play a pivotal role in the
development of new Hams, and provide the fabric that binds the members
into effective teams supporting
on-air activities and events. These efforts result in a strong
emergency communications capability in the Commonwealth, and directly
support the FCC’s vision of the Amateur Radio Service providing a public
service to the Nation. </span></p>

thank the Herculean efforts accomplished by Section Managers Joe Pasla
and Carl Clements, and plan to build on their efforts. It is my fervent
hope that I can serve all the
more than 20,000 Amateur Radio Operators in the Commonwealth. As such,
my goals are:

Foster communications between the clubs, organizations, members and non-members, and our greater communities.<br>

Aid in collaboration with the above so that we can use our collective
knowledge to help build and share best practices. To that end, there is a
collaborative portal that has been established that is designed to be a
"working page".

Enable greater coordination to enable us to take advantage of things
like guest speakers, webinars, regional or state-wide exercises, etc.

request the support of your Club as I, and my new leadership team
address these goals. For example, I hope you’ll continue to promote
licensing classes, and exam sessions.
The Commonwealth averages 45 new hams per month, and sustaining growth
in new members is good for the Clubs, as it is for the Amateur Radio
Service. Make it a practice to welcome new hams in the vicinity of your
Club. The leads list of new hams, provided
by the League is published monthly and distributed by our Affiliated
Club Coordinator (ACC) to each of your Clubs. </span></p>

young members into the service is critical to our future. As such, I
hope you’ll explore linking your Club to a local Scout group, or
middle/high school Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) program. Where applicable, reach
out to your local college or university, and explore if the faculty and
students might start a collegiate Amateur Radio Club. </span></p>

Clubs – and the Commonwealth-wide system of Amateur Radio repeaters you
operate, creates a backup emergency communications system that is
coveted by the Virginia Office of
Emergency Management, as reaffirmed by them at last-months Statewide
Interoperability Executive Committee (SIEC) quarterly meeting. Use your
Club’s repeaters to practice good traffic management skills, and teach
these skills to new operators. Please continue
to lead your Club’s efforts on special Emergency Communications (EmComm)
exercises, and dedicate at least one Club meeting this year on the
principles of EmComm. </span></p>

my door is open. I’ve asked our ACC to set up a series of regional
meetings with you so that I can meet you and begin a conversation on how
together we can expand our
5,000 or so ARRL members to include more of the 20,000 Hams in the
