To All:
The Smithsonian Amateur Radio Group (SARG) has been reconstituted and
presently has over 80 licensed members made up of technical staff members
of the Institution. This highly motivated group's focus is getting advanced
licenses, operating HF, carrying out their first successful field day and
setting up a permanent station at the SI EOC in Downtown DC. I am one of
two original operators who have been grandfathered into the group and I
provide guidance on many matters. The Group has applied to become an ARRL
affiliated group and expects acceptance by the league by field day.
1) This group is enthusiastic about their first field day operation. They
have secured a 600X600 ft sire on a bluff overlooking the bay in
Davidsonville, MD at the Smithsonian's SERC facility. I made a site visit
with about ten members of the group a couple of weeks ago and found
suitable trees at extreme ends of the site, to anchor some collinear
dipoles. AB577's will be used to support antennas in the middle. It is
expected that the operation will be 3A, with a GOTA station. 80-75, 40 and
20 will be the focus of the 3A with the GOTA station hopefully very busy on
10 and 15. The group needs assistance in setting up, operating ( and
teaching) , and tearing down. This is a unique opportunity to pass your
field day operational knowledge down to this group.
2) The Group is asking for donations to assist them in obtaining radios and
accessories for the permanent station/field day and setup materials for
field day, This is an official group within the SI and donations would be
made to the SI targeted to the SARG. Please assist them in returning NN3SI
to the air in a truly prolific manner from its own permanent location.
Please contact me off-line at my email /or cell nr 301-266-6666,.
Thank you for your generosity ahead of time.
Respectfully
Phil K3EW
