Hello DXers.
Strategy of Working 8Q7DX on 40 CW.

I had 8Q7DX confirmed onClubLog on 15 and 20, and it’s a matter of mailing my card, postage, etc., butI wanted to QSO on 40.   I was watchingthe Red Sox and Blue Jay game Monday night when I checked the DX Summit on myiPhone.  I saw that the W3LPL RBN spottedhim “Heard in PA” on 7007 at 0004 (times are UTC); and AK4AT spotted him at0014, posting “nice opening to the east coast.”   I swung into action.

His signal was okay, butnot very strong, 549 to 559.  He's an excellent op, and he washandling the pileup very well with his split operation. But there were guys tuning up on his freq, andothers sending “up”.   All that and a little occasional QRN created a mess, soit was usually hard to hear the entire call that he answered.   I called numerous times without a QSO.

He went QRT on 7007 around0040, and was later spotted by E70T on 1817 at 0051.  I figured that 160 meters would not producemany QSOs for him because of poor conditions caused by signal absorption.   I expected that he would return to 40, so Ikept my receiver on 7007, waiting for him while doing other things in the shack.

My strategy worked.  160 didn’t work for him, so he came back on7007 at 0057, and as I expected, most of the pileup had disappeared.   I called him once on 7008.2, and I had a niceclean QSO at 0057.  I was his first QSO in his second time on 40.  Since confirmed onClubLog.
