Hello DXers,
I recently worked BG0BBB on 17 and BG3ILY on 15, both on FT8and in Zone 23.
Zone 23 as published by CQ Magazine is defined as:
Zone 23. Central Zone of Asia: JT (Mongolia), UA0Y, BY3G‑L (NeiMenggu), BY9G‑L (GanSu), BY9M‑R (NingXia), BY9S‑Z (QingHai) and BY0.
My sample of two call signs is very small, but I’m concludingthat the number and letter after the call are important in the zone identification. The second letter of the call does not haveto be a “Y” as defined above.
For example, I worked the followining stations, all with a “3”: BD3CB, BY3CQ, and BH3APK. All have a "3" but all are in Zone 24.
The advice is to ignore the second letter of the call sign, but the number and letter after the number are important. Thus the call could be BA3LLL, BH3KKK, or BH9MMMand they would be in Zone 23.
But I follow the rule: “When in doubt, make the QSO and look it up later.” Or accept the logger info, but if the loggerinfo doesn’t look right, look up the call and make the correction.
40 meters has been open on FT8 to China in the hours around local sunrise. I hope I can work Zone 23 one of these days.
Please weigh in with any additional info.
Tnx es 73
Fred
